There is something of a stereotype of temp workers being unreliable or poorly skilled. But, in my experience, this is far from the case. These are highly qualified candidates (often in niche roles) who are willing to start work as quickly as you need them to. They have simply made a lifestyle choice to be employed through temporary contracts – although, many of my temps have found themselves being offered permanent employment by thoroughly impressed business owners.
Temp workers are perhaps the most diverse range of candidates I have ever had the pleasure of working with – they come from all ages, races, genders and backgrounds and have chosen to enjoy the flexibility of contract work.
So often, temp workers are drafted in, last minute, in order to cover employees on maternity leave, holiday or long-term sickness or to provide recruitment solutions whilst things like new internal systems are implemented.
Here are just some of the reasons why my candidates choose to temp:
Lifestyle
As I said, temp workers come from all walks of life. This can mean a student, looking to fill up their summer with some contract work or a frequent traveler who would like more time off than a permanent position would allow. It’s an incredibly flexible way of working. You are in control of your career and it’s far easier to take career breaks and fit your job around your life – you can see why temping is appealing for workers with young families or care responsibilities.
Experience
You might well be an experienced receptionist within an Accountancy firm, but have you considered working for a newspaper or a whisky distillery? So many different industries require the same level of knowledge and experience across the board, so this will give you an excellent opportunity to transfer your skills across different sectors. New opportunities to learn can be very refreshing and can offer the chances to gain experience in new systems, policy and processes.
Options
Several of my candidates are in the fortunate position where they are able to weigh up their career options. They don’t necessarily have too many financial pressures or a determined career path. Therefore, temp work gives them the chance to explore a number of different sectors without having to commit to a particular role in a certain market.
CV
If you find yourself in the position of looking for full-time, permanent work, taking on a temporary contract can be a great way to keep your skills refreshed and your CV up-to-date. It will keep you up to speed with any developments in your chosen sector and perhaps give you the chance to develop your skillset – something you can add to your CV with pride. While you’re still looking to secure a permanent job, temping will provide you with some wages – and perhaps a better idea of where to take your career.
I have a healthy talent pipeline of experienced temp candidates who are able to hit the ground running and positively impact your business. If you’d like to discuss your recruitment needs – long or short-term – please get in touch with me: 0141 353 8372 /
